How do i get my laptop conected to my TV?

I just got a HD-MI and VGA cable so that I could hook the VGA to my computer and the HD MI to my tv. There is no connection. I was under the impression that this would work, but so far it has not. Am I dong something wrong, or do I need to get a different cord?
