How does incident light that falls on an object affect the motion of electrons in the atoms of the object?

The light falling on an object imparts some energy; the overall object heats, especially in the area directly lighted. Result being the molecules of the object become more energetic with electrons more in motion. If the heat is sufficient the electrons may even experience an increase in orbit level.
